A small scatter-shot cannon was once mounted in the large opening shown here, and would blast a variety of debris (rocks, glass, and small bits of metal), much like a shotgun. It was strategically placed to repel foot attacks on the entrance to the fort, should enemy troops attempt to do so via the moat.
