Southern troops had no mortars with which to fire back on the northern troops attacking them. They improvised and used 32-pounder carronades instead (named for the 32-pound cannonballs they shot). This particular carronade was made in 1820, and was mounted on the U.S.S. Columbus until the 1840s.
